چکیده
Abstract. Soil moisture (SM) plays a critical role in the water and energy cycles of Earth system; consequently, long-term SM product with high quality is urgently needed. In this study, five products, including one microwave remote sensing – European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) four reanalysis data sets Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis Interim (ERA-Interim), National Centers Environmental Prediction (NCEP), 20th Century Project from Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), ECMWF 5 (ERA5) are systematically evaluated using situ measurements during 1981–2013 climate regions at different timescales over Chinese mainland. The results show that ESA CCI closest to observations terms both spatial distributions magnitude monthly SM. All products tend overestimate soil all but have higher correlations than except Northwest China. largest inconsistency found southern Northeast China region, an unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) value larger 0.04. However, exhibit certain weaknesses representing interannual variation relative bias 144.4 % ERA-Interim under extreme severe wet conditions northeastern China, lowest product, minimum 0.48 northwestern Decomposing errors suggests dominant contribution correlation term large CCI. As result, good option hydrometeorological applications on ERA5 also promising especially northern low coefficient. This intercomparison study provides clues enhancement further hydrological applications.

Evaluation of Satellite and Reanalysis Soil Moisture Products over Southwest China Using Ground-Based Measurements
Long-term global satellite and reanalysis soil moisture products have been available for several years. In this study, in situ soil moisture measurements from 2008 to 2012 over Southwest China are used to evaluate the accuracy of four satellite-based products and one reanalysis soil moisture product. These products are the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth observing system (A...
متن کاملEvaluation of Reanalysis Soil Moisture Simulations Using Updated Chinese Soil Moisture Observations
Using 19 years of Chinese soil moisture data from 1981-1999, we evaluate soil moisture in three reanalysis outputs: ERA40, NCEP/NCAR reanalysis (R-1), and NCEP/DOE reanalysis 2 (R-2) over China. R-2 shows better interannual variability and seasonal patterns of soil moisture than R-1 as the result of incorporation of observed precipitation. ERA40 produces a better mean value of soil moisture for...
متن کاملPreliminary Evaluation of the SMAP Radiometer Soil Moisture Product over China Using In Situ Data
The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite makes coincident global measurements of soil moisture using an L-band radar instrument and an L-band radiometer. It is crucial to evaluate the errors in the newest L-band SMAP satellite-derived soil moisture products, before they are routinely used in scientific research and applications. This study represents the first evaluation of the SMAP ra...
متن کاملAn evaluation of ASCAT surface soil moisture products with in-situ observations in southwestern France
A long term data acquisition effort of profile soil moisture is currently underway at 13 automatic weather stations located in southwestern France. In this study, the soil moisture measured in-situ at 5 cm is used to evaluate the normalised surface soil moisture (SSM) estimates derived from coarse-resolution (25 km) active microwave data of the ASCAT 5 scatterometer instrument (onboard METOP), ...
متن کاملComprehensive Evaluation of High-Resolution Satellite-Based Precipitation Products over China
Characterizing the errors in satellite-based precipitation estimation products is crucial for understanding their effects in hydrological applications. Six precipitation products derived from three algorithms are comprehensively evaluated against gauge data over mainland China from December 2006 to November 2010. These products include three satellite-only estimates: the Global Satellite Mappin...
